Crossroads, Garwood, NJ
April 13th, 2013
On April 13, 2013 Don Dokken spent the evening with his fans, old and new, at Crossroads in Garwood, New Jersey. It was a very intimate, storytellers style performance, and it was absolutely amazing. Throughout his performance he was accompanied by Mark Boals who plays with Yngwie Malmsteen, and their harmonies were unsurpassed. Trimm was the opening band and was also awesome. They had the crowd singing along with several covers from our favorite era, “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “I Remember You,” and “Fallen Angel.”
Don's colorful stories were just as enjoyable as his music. He told us about the time he met George Harrison and how it turned into an impromptu jam. He said the three songs they played that night were Yesterday, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, and Nowhere Man, and how the moment was so special to him that he wanted to share the same three songs with us. He didn't do a medley; he played all three songs in their entirety and it was absolutely beautiful.
Don and Mark played most of Dokken's hits with a detailed, engaging story before each, and he told us that it was the last time he'd ever perform Breaking The Chains live.
The atmosphere didn't feel like we were watching a rock show by a hugely successful band. Instead, it felt like we were all hanging out around a bonfire and two very talented musicians brought their guitars to play. We all laughed together, there were a few tears, and the room was filled with sonic passion.
After the show, Don stepped off the stage into the audience and spent about an hour hanging out with all of us. He was friendly and kind, and refreshingly did not have a trace of over inflated rock star ego that sadly poisons many truly talented people. Don made sure that much like his evening with George Harrison was to him, our entire evening was totally unforgettable and absolutely awesome.
