Kansas City Speedway, Kansas City KS
October 19th 2012
After a fairly long, cold and snowy winter, this week finally brought some nice sunny and 70 degree days. Wearing shorts and a tee shirt for the first time in months reminds me of one important thing, its concert festival season! With festival spirit in mind I decided to go back and review some of my favorite outdoor shows from 2012, Adelitas Way was the first set I came across.
The Adelitas Way show was part of the Sprint Cup Nascar festivities at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City and took place on October 19th. I had put in for a photo pit pass several weeks before the show and had no response until the night before the show. The response was short, be there before the show which starts at 6 and I was to text drummer Tre Stafford when I arrived, he has my pass. I gather up my gear and make the hour drive and start texting when I get to the speedway with no response. Now its 15 minutes before the band goes on so I walk around the side of the stage and ask the first guy I see if he could find Tre for me and he responds, "I'm Tre and I have your pass."
Adelitas Way went on stage to an energetic crowd of 15,000 plus Nascar fans and even though it was on the chilly side the band managed to get the crowd fired up. Frontman, Rick DeJesus put a lot of emotion into his performance and really engaged the crowd, even jumping into the crowd at one point during a song. I was also impressed with showmanship of guitarists, Robert Zakaryan and Keith Wallen. Both were very energetic and looked like they really enjoy what they are doing. When you have Tre Stafford (drums) and Derek Johnston (bass) adding the rhythm, this combination of band members makes for a tight and on point band. They covered all their hit songs including Invincible, The Collapse, Sick and Criticize which kept everyone on their feet for the entire 60 minute set and really reinforced the reasons that I like this band.
